And perhaps the latest pronouncement that Black Party official Eldridge Cleaver--admitted revolutionary--an ex-convict, now on probation, facing-a charge of engaging in a shootout with police--has been appointed to lecture on the history of racism in America at the University of California's Berkeley campus. The same Berkeley campus that has given us such gems as the filthy speech movement--Mario Savic--self admitted Communist Bettina Aptheker, violence and riots ad nauseum. We could challenge "Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver's teaching credentials--his his absence of any credentials--his right to skim off some gocd American tax dollars, and all that. Such challenges should be covicus. Eldridge Cleaver is a Black Panther, and I don't mean a pussycat. He is a high ranking official in a paramilitary organization of young. racists. na -militant 100-448006 287 ENCLOSURE 2 SUBSIDIZING IRRESSIBILITY 2 NEWSEEK MAGAZINE, this week, quotes him as telling 175 attorneys gathered in San Francisco that they could best help the black movement by donating machine guns— that the whole American capitalistic system and its institutions and police need to be assigned to the garbage can of history. He says there are people who are buying guns to kill judges and police and cor- poration lawyers, and that we need lawyers who have a law book in one hand and a gun in the other so that, as he puts it, "If to the garbage can of history. This same Eldridge Cleaver--high official of the Black Panthers--is also the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for President of the United States. People like Eldridge Cleaver are the enemy of every decent black and white American, because they mean to physically destroy us and our way of life. And yet, the University of California at Berkeley announces that Eldridge Cleaver will lecture on the University of California campus. And you and I and the rest of the overburdened taxpayers are going to be forced to pay for his brand of subversion of our way of life. CLEAVER TELLS IT LIKE HE IS By George Putnam September 11, 1968 There is a sericus and great question in this reporter's mind whether a newsman should ignore such militant organizations as the Black Panthers--give them no pub- licity whatsoever--or whether it is the newsman's responsibility to bring to public attention what this paramilitary crganization of military racists has in stcre for the United States of America. It is this reporter's opinion the latter course must--in all good conscience and responsibility---be followed. NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE, in its September sixteenth issue, offers a word from the Peace and Freedom candidate, ex-convict Eldridge Cleaver, who is the Presidential ncminee of the Peace and Freedom Party--and the Black Panthers' Minister of Information. Last weck, Eldridge Cleaver stced before a group of 175 attorneys, all under the age of thirty-six, in a San Francisco dining room--and he told it like he is. Standing there, dressed in black and wearing a tiny pearl earring in his left ear, he told the barristers' club they cculd best help the black movement by donating machine guns. It is this reporter's opinion that it is important that all of us listen and understand what this ex-con has to say. "America is up against the wall," says Cleaver. "This whole apparatus--this capitalistic system and its institutions and police--all need to be assigned to the garbage can of history, and I don't give a--blank--who doesn't 1:ke it. "You're ail chasing dollars, but there are other people who are chasing dollars to buy guns to kill judges and police and ccr- poration lawyers. We need lawyers who have a law bock in one hand and a gun in the other, so if he goes to court and that--blank---dcesn't come cut right, he can pull cut his gun and start shooting." And then Cleaver continued, "If I could get two machine guns cut of this crowd, I wouldn't care if you applauded me or threw glasses at me, and then I'd get my black-- blank--cut of here." And then, lest anycne mistake his full meaning, Cleaver concluded with these remarks, "I meant all my insults to those who won't choose my side--the right side. You people can take your wallets, credit cards, and cut your mother-- blank--neck. You people on the other side, I love you. I hope you'll take your guns and shoot judges and pclice." Then Cleaver--ex-convict, Black Panther Minister of Information, and Presidential nomince of the Peace and Freedom Party, gets a polite ovation, if you please, from the 175 lawyers--all under age thirty-six. One of the lawyers asks--"What can we whites do to help the black man's cause?" Cleaver responds--"Kill some white people." At that point, the mecting ends, and as the crowd moves toward the elevators, one young lawyer--pink cheeked--turns to a companion and remarks, "Say, his speech certainly reflects the growing polarization between the races, doesn't it?" Eldridge Cleaver and the Black Panther Party are busy on many fronts. This revclutionary group has the support of the Free Huey movement--the Afro-American Student Union--the Black Student Union--Honkies for Hucy-- The Young Socialist Alliance--the Socialist Workers' Party--the Independent Socialist Club--the Students for a Democratic Scciety--the Progressive Labor Party--and numerous anti-draft and anti-war groups. But perhaps the most productive affiliation for the Black Panthers have been their merger with SNCC--their coalition with the Peace and Freedom Party--and the recent declaration of the Communist Party of the United States that it supports Huey Newton. As I said at the cutset, the pcople have a right to know what the Black Panther Party has in store for them. But. what a strange spectacle it is to witness 175 American attorneys--cfficers of the court--crowded intc a San Francisco dining room to hear an ex-convict as he rants and rages and insults them-tells them how he plans to destroy them and every other white man--and then give this revolutionary a very polite ovation! And when one of them asks what whites can do to help the black man's cause, this man of "peace and freedom" responâs, "Kill some white pecple." And those 175 attorneys--cfficers of the court--give this revolutionary a very polite ovation---- after hearing this plan for their own execution! Envelopes will be purchased from various stores and care will be taken to leave no fingerprints on the letters or the envelopes. Every precaution will be taken to conceal the source of this letter. Bureau authority is requested to reproduce the letter enclosed for the Bureau and to mail it to a number of individuals in San Diego.
