GARRETT explained that his lessons in weapon building were designed to show blacks they could control the mechanisms of force. According to the article he also made such statements as "Black people are slaves." "We don't control our own goods and our own services." "We don't control our own minds and we don't control the mechanisms of force and violence." "Blacks cannot receive an education at a white school." "The university is the Devil's 'workshop'." "All education in America is white supremists. You are not responsible for these buildings, therefore, you can destroy them." Additional statements in a similar vein are included in the Portland LHM. Other militants, including McKenzie, were also arrested in the raid, most were charged with disorderly conduct but the case was dis missed. McKenzie and Charles Ballard were censured by the WOPC, as both were NOP workers. Sriith first made news in the summer of 1957 when he and another militant were members of the Black Organizing Project, a krerunner of the invaders, and were charged by Memphis Area-Project South board members with preaching black power while on the poverty payroll. Van Cab-\nbbage has no arres; record.\n• Arthur James (Big Doc) Norwood, 19. injured in the\nKansas Street Package Store attempted hold-up. He was\nshct by Abraham Coffee, 77, who came from the rear of the\nliquor store with a loaded shotgun while thire robbers were\nin the process of holding up the place.
